London Wayfarers Hockey Club was founded in August 1989 in Battersea, South West London.
We have gone from strength to strength since our beginnings and are now the largest hockey club in the UK with over 1,500 members.
We currently have more than 400 senior members in 19 senior sides (nine men’s, nine ladies and a mixed team) and our Back to Hockey programme. One of the men’s sides is a veterans team, the Centurions playing in the London Vets League. We also offer mixed hockey and summer hockey programmes.
In January 2010 we introduced our Junior section and membership surpassed the 1,000 mark in the 2019-20 season with many girls and boys joining us. We regularly field seventeen 11-a-side teams across five age groups with many more playing at festivals. The intention is for juniors to transfer to our senior teams and continue to represent London Wayfarers Hockey Club at a higher level. In the 2018-19 season we had our first junior playing for our Ladies 1s and since we have many more players joining senior teams.
The standard of hockey we play varies widely throughout the club. Our highest teams being performance based at a competitive level to more social orientated hockey further down the club.
We are conscious that most of the members play hockey for fun and therefore aim to provide an inclusive environment with a great hockey experience for all our members.
Men
The Men’s 1s play in National League Conference East after winning the South Prem Division 1 in 2019-20. Our other men’s teams compete in the Surrey/Hampshire and London Hockey Leagues.
Ladies
The Ladies 1s are currently playing in the South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 and will hopefully join the men in the National League in the future. Our other ladies teams compete in the Surrey Ladies Hockey League.
Juniors
Our Junior section is split into age groups and enter competitions appropriate to their age and experience. Our juniors are in action every Sunday across the South of London. We also offer midweek junior performance training sessions in Battersea. Our very popular GK Academy runs several sessions per week catering for 50+ goalies with a professional coaching set up. There are over 30 hockey camps throughout the year to keep everyone active during school holidays.
Year-on-year our teams prove to be very competitive, gaining promotions across the board.
Flyerz Hockey
Launched in September 2020, Flyerz Hockey provides hockey sessions for people with pan-disabilities and involves a variety of activities, exercise and most importantly fun.
Club House
We may be a nomadic club, however our spiritual home is at Battersea Park. On Saturdays, you will find many London Wayfarers socialising in what we consider to be our clubhouse, The Draft House Westbridge on Battersea Bridge Road. For more information on our social activities throughout the season, please check out our events calendar.
